Park
Mission Tejas State Park covers 660 acres in Houston County, Texas, along State Highway 21 near Grapeland and Crockett in the Piney Woods region.
Established in the 1930s after local citizens purchased land believed to mark the site of Mission San Francisco de los Tejas—the first Spanish mission in Texas founded in 1690 among Nabedache Caddo Indians, later abandoned—and developed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 888 from 1934-1935 with a replica mission, fire tower, trails, and picnic areas, it transferred to Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1957.
Visitors enjoy fishing in a small pond, 4.5 miles of hiking trails including a segment of El Camino Real de los Tejas, camping in 15 developed sites or primitive areas, picnicking, birdwatching, and exploring the historic 1828-1838 Rice Family log home, blending pioneer history with natural recreation.
