National Forest
Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness, located about 40 miles east of Ketchikan, Alaska, covers over 2.2 million acres within the Tongass National Forest and is the largest wilderness area there.
It was designated as a National Monument in 1978 and features steep-walled fjords carved by glaciers, coastal cliffs rising up to 3,000 feet, dense rainforest with Sitka spruce and western hemlock, and abundant wildlife including bears, mountain goats, and salmon.
The fjords, which are deep glacial valleys now filled with seawater, offer striking natural beauty comparable to Yosemite. Visitors often explore the area by boat, floatplane, or kayak, enjoying pristine lakes, waterfalls, mineral springs, and volcanic lava flows. Its remote location preserves the area's wild character, providing a unique wilderness experience along Alaska's Inside Passage coast.
