Botanical Garden
Mitchell Park Domes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a horticultural conservatory complex comprised of three large glass domes, completed between 1964 and 1967, designed by architect Donald L. Grieb.
Each dome simulates a different climate: the Floral Show Dome features seasonal flower displays, the Tropical Dome houses plants and animals from rainforest environments, and the Desert Dome showcases cacti and succulents from arid regions.
The Domes replaced the original conservatory built in 1898 and have become a symbol of Milwaukee, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Recognized as a midcentury architectural marvel, they use wire-embedded glass to allow natural light while managing heat, facilitating year-round plant growth.
Despite deterioration issues leading to temporary closures, a strong preservation effort is underway to restore these iconic structures, ensuring they continue to serve as an educational and recreational space celebrating botanical diversity and environmental awareness.
