Nature Reserve
Natural Bridge Caverns, located near San Antonio, Texas, in the Texas Hill Country, is the largest commercial cavern in the state and named for a 60-foot natural limestone slab that forms a bridge over the cavern's entrance.
Discovered on March 27, 1960, by four students from St. Mary's University, the caverns feature stunning geological formations, including towering columns, emerald pools, and delicate crystalline soda straws, all within a consistently cool and humid environment. Development to open the caverns to the public began in 1963, and they officially opened on July 3, 1964, dedicated as "A Jewel in the Crown of Texas Attractions."
The site is recognized as a U.S. National Natural Landmark and is still owned and operated by the family who developed it. The caverns also hold archaeological significance, with artifacts dating back thousands of years, indicating ancient human use, making it a popular natural and historical tourist destination.
