Park
Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, located northeast of Faribault in Rice County, Minnesota, preserves one of the last sizable remnants of the vast "Big Woods" hardwood forest that once covered much of south-central Minnesota before widespread logging and farming.
Named after Nerstrand, Norway, the park features towering sugar maple, basswood, elm, green ash, and ironwood trees along Prairie Creek, with spring wildflowers including the endangered dwarf trout lily, vibrant fall colors, ferns, mushrooms, and Hidden Falls accessible via trails like the 1-mile boardwalk loop.
Spanning about 2,884 acres with 11 miles of hiking paths, picnic areas, a visitor center, and campsites, it supports birdwatching, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling in winter, drawing visitors for its serene, pre-settlement ecosystem formed on ancient Platteville Limestone bedrock.
