Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia, began as the summer estate of Earl W. Oglebay, an industrialist and philanthropist who bought the original 25-acre farm in 1900 and expanded it to over 750 acres by his death in 1926.
Oglebay was passionate about agricultural innovation and developed the estate as a model farm with diverse operations including dairy, poultry, vineyards, and experimental crop methods.
After his passing, Oglebay willed the estate to the people of Wheeling for public recreation, and in 1928 it officially became Oglebay Park. Over time, the park evolved into a 1,650-acre resort offering extensive amenities such as golf courses, a zoo, botanical gardens, hiking trails, an amphitheater, a winter sports complex, lodges like Wilson Lodge, dining, and event facilities.
The resort reflects a legacy of community generosity, outdoor recreation, and historic preservation, serving as a major destination for visitors to the region.
