Old Tunnel State Park, Texas, United States

Park

Old Tunnel State Park is Texas's smallest state park at 16.1 acres, located halfway between Fredericksburg and Comfort on Old San Antonio Road in Kendall County, about 11 miles south of Fredericksburg.

This historic site centers on a 920-foot railroad tunnel built in 1913 by the Fredericksburg and Northern Railway, abandoned in 1942, and now home to up to 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats and 3,000 cave myotis bats from May through October, emerging at sunset in a spectacular aerial display viewable from upper and lower decks (reservations required after 5 p.m. November-April).

Visitors enjoy a short half-mile nature trail for hiking, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing amid Hill Country scenery, with interpretive signs on railroad history, bats, and ecology, open sunrise to 5 p.m. year-round and free to enter.
