Historical Place
Osage Village State Historic Site in Vernon County, Missouri, preserves the archaeological remains of a major Osage Native American village that thrived between 1700 and 1775 on a hilltop near the Osage River.
At its peak, the village featured around 200 lodges and housed 2,000 to 3,000 people, marking it as one of the largest Osage settlements in the region during a time when the Osage controlled vast territories across southern Missouri, Arkansas, eastern Kansas, and Oklahoma.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 as the Brown Osage Village Site (Smithsonian trinomial 23VE03), it is now managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, offering visitors a short self-guided walking trail with interpretive exhibits to visualize daily Osage life, including nut-cracking outcrops and bone tool grooves, before their forced relocation to reservations in Kansas and later Oklahoma following U.S. treaties after 1804.
