Monument
Our Lady of the Rockies is a 90-foot tall statue of the Virgin Mary located atop the Continental Divide near Butte, Montana, visible from miles away.
The monument was conceived in 1979 by Bob O’Bill, who promised to build a shrine to the Virgin Mary if his wife recovered from cancer. Construction began soon after, with help from local volunteers and donated materials, including structural metal from Butte's historic copper mines. The statue was assembled on the mountain in 1985 in six sections airlifted by helicopter.
It stands as a non-denominational tribute to all women, especially mothers, symbolizing hope, faith, and community resilience during a time when Butte's mining economy was in decline. The site also features a road leading up to the monument, built by volunteers alongside the statue.
