Park
Painted Rocks State Park covers 23 acres at 4,724 feet elevation in the West Fork Valley of the Bitterroot Mountains, 24 miles south of Darby, Montana, along the shores of Painted Rocks Reservoir amid granite and rhyolite cliffs vividly colored by green, yellow, and orange lichens.
Named for these striking rock formations visible under Bortle class 1 dark skies ideal for stargazing, the year-round park offers 25 first-come, first-served campsites suitable for tents and RVs up to 25 feet, vault toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, grills, a boat ramp, and dock for boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.
Surrounded by pine forests and towering peaks, visitors enjoy nearby hiking and biking trailheads into national forest lands, wildlife viewing, and a peaceful escape from light pollution.
