Park
Palmetto State Park spans 265 acres in Gonzales County, Texas, northwest of Gonzales and southeast of Luling along the San Marcos River, with land acquired in 1934–1936 and opened in 1936, named for its abundant dwarf palmettos (Sabal minor) thriving in the park's jungle-like bogs and swamps.
This Central Texas gem features spring-fed Oxbow Lake for swimming, angling, kayaking, and paddleboarding, plus five miles of hiking and biking trails through bottomland forests draped in Spanish moss, marshes, and Civilian Conservation Corps-built structures like a native sandstone refectory, water tower, rock pools, and barbecue pits.
Visitors enjoy tent and RV camping, cabins, picnicking, fishing piers, scenic overlooks, playgrounds, birdwatching, and ranger programs amid diverse plants and animals in this lush, tropical-feeling oasis an hour from Austin and San Antonio.
