Park
Route 66 State Park in Missouri covers 424 acres along the Meramec River near Eureka, east of St. Louis, on the site of the former town of Times Beach evacuated after a 1982 dioxin contamination crisis that led to a massive Superfund cleanup.
This day-use park managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources preserves a slice of the "Mother Road" with a visitor center in the historic 1935 Bridgehead Inn roadhouse featuring Route 66 memorabilia, the original Springfield highway sign, photos of demolished roadside attractions, and exhibits on the area's ecological recovery.
Visitors enjoy paved multi-use trails for hiking biking and equestrian rides through oak-hickory forests alive with over 175 bird species deer and turkeys, picnic areas, a boat ramp for Meramec River access, and the iconic nonfunctional 1932 Warren truss bridge spanning the river.
