Historical Landmark
The Salt Lake City Tabernacle, built between 1864 and 1867 under the direction of Brigham Young and designed by architect William H. Folsom with engineering by Henry Grow, is an architectural and acoustic marvel located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah.
It is famous for its massive, elongated dome roof spanning 150 feet without any supporting interior pillars, thanks to a lattice-truss system borrowed from bridge construction. The building’s acoustic design allows sound from the pulpit to carry clearly to all corners of the 9,000-seat auditorium.
Constructed largely with volunteer labor using local materials like sandstone and timber pegged and lashed with green rawhide, it was once the largest assembly hall in the U.S. The Tabernacle has hosted countless religious and cultural events and is best known as the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, symbolizing the ingenuity and dedication of the pioneer-era LDS community.
