Zoo
The San Antonio Zoo, established in 1914, began as a collection of animals donated by Colonel George W. Brackenridge and initially located on his deeded land in Brackenridge Park.
The zoo expanded rapidly, pioneering cageless exhibits such as the Barless Bear Terraces and Primate Paradise in 1929, designed to create a more natural and immersive environment for visitors and animals. Built into a former rock quarry, the zoo utilized the limestone cliffs and an extensive canal system from the San Antonio River to enhance its landscape and animal habitats.
Over the decades, it grew to house more than 3,500 animals across 750 species, including rare and endangered species like the whooping crane and giant armadillo. Managed by the San Antonio Zoological Society since 1931, the zoo is known for its commitment to conservation, education, and developing modern habitats that blend natural elements with public viewing. It is a major attraction drawing millions annually, offering diverse exhibits, animal encounters, and a focus on wildlife preservation and research.
