Park

Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site near Hillsboro in Jefferson County, Missouri, preserves one of only four remaining covered bridges in the state, a Howe-truss design built in 1872 by John H. Morse as part of a post-Civil War road improvement program connecting Hillsboro to St. Louis.

Spanning 74 feet over Sandy Creek with its iconic red barn-like exterior, the bridge was destroyed by flooding in 1886 and rebuilt that year by Henry Steffin using original timbers and abutments for $899, later restored extensively in 1984 after further flood damage. Acquired by Missouri State Parks in 1968, listed on the National Register in 1970, and now limited to pedestrian traffic on its 205-acre site, it offers interpretive displays, picnic areas, trails, and scenic photo opportunities amid natural surroundings.
