Sappington Cemetery State Historic Site, located five miles southwest of Arrow Rock in Saline County, Missouri, preserves a two-acre family cemetery established in 1831 by prominent physician Dr. John Sappington, who is buried there along with two Missouri governors—his sons-in-law Claiborne Fox Jackson (15th governor) and Meredith Miles Marmaduke (8th governor)—and 111 marked graves enclosed by a stone wall and iron fence added in 1859.
The site highlights mid-19th-century cemetery architecture, pioneer family influence in Missouri's Boonslick region, and Sappington's legacy inventing quinine malaria pills. Added to Missouri's state park system in 1967 and expanded in 2014 to include the nearby Sappington African American Cemetery for the area's formerly enslaved people and Black community with over 350 burials, it remains open sunrise to sunset without facilities.
