Park
Sluice Boxes State Park in central Montana, 12 miles south of Belt along the Kings Hill Scenic Byway, spans the northernmost eight miles of dramatic Belt Creek canyon in the Little Belt Mountains, featuring towering limestone cliffs, ledges, and remnants of 19th-century mining towns, railroads, and cabins from silver and limestone booms.
Established in 1970, this rugged day-use and backcountry area offers trout fishing, hiking and floating along the old seven-mile railroad grade trail (ford creek crossings required, best mid-July to September), picnicking, wildlife viewing, hunting, and photography amid swift cold waters and changing weather, with parking and a latrine at Riceville Bridge trailhead but no bridges or facilities deeper in. A permit is needed for backcountry camping, and visitors must prepare for steep terrain and hazards in this historic, scenic canyon.
