Museum
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia, honors George Washington, the nation's most famous Mason.
Initiated by the Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 and other Masonic organizations, the memorial association was formed in 1910 to build a grand temple that would also safely house important Washingtoniana artifacts owned by the lodge. Construction officially began in 1922 after extensive fundraising efforts, following a "pay-as-you-go" approach to finance the project without borrowing.
Designed by architect Harvey Wiley Corbett, the structure combines neoclassical and modern skyscraper elements, towering ten stories and reaching over 300 feet, dominating the Alexandria skyline. The cornerstone was laid in 1923 with President Calvin Coolidge and thousands of Freemasons present, and the building was dedicated in 1932.
The memorial serves as a museum, headquarters for various Masonic bodies, and an impressive landmark that offers panoramic views of Old Town Alexandria and the Washington Monument, symbolizing the enduring respect of Freemasons nationwide for George Washington’s legacy.
