Park and Garden
Theodore Wirth Regional Park in Minnesota, spanning 759 acres across Minneapolis and Golden Valley, is the largest park in the Minneapolis system, named after Theodore Wirth, a Swiss-born park superintendent who transformed the city’s parks from 1,810 to over 5,200 acres in the early 20th century.
Established originally as Saratoga Park in 1889, it was renamed to honor Wirth in 1938. The park offers a variety of amenities including two golf courses (an 18-hole and a 9-hole par-3), Wirth Lake, Birch Pond, miles of walking and biking trails, cross-country ski paths, snow tubing hills, and mountain biking trails suitable for different skill levels. It also features unique natural sites like the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and a large oak savanna habitat that highlights the area's natural and cultural heritage, especially significant to the Dakota people.
With historical trails, scenic landscapes, and facilities like The Trailhead community hub, Theodore Wirth Park is a year-round destination for recreation, connection with nature, and cultural exploration.
