Thousand Hills State Park in Missouri covers over 3,000 acres two miles west of Kirksville in Adair County, centered on 573-acre Forest Lake amid gently rolling hills, woody shores, broad savannas, and woodlands that evoke northern Missouri's less-developed past.
Established with the lake filled in 1956, it features Native American petroglyphs over 1,500 years old viewable at an interpretive shelter, plus a marina, boat rentals and ramp, swimming beach, accessible fishing dock, restaurant, cabins, campsites, picnic areas, and a 10.5-mile loop trail for hiking and mountain biking through diverse flora and fauna including resident and migratory wildlife.
Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and recently certified as an Urban Night Sky Place, this northeast Missouri gem offers stargazing, boating, and nature escapes.
