Park and Garden
Totem Bight State Historical Park in Alaska is a cultural and natural site located near Ketchikan, preserving a collection of intricately carved totem poles and a traditional Tlingit clan house replica on land that was once a Native Alaskan campground.
Established in 1938 by the U.S. Forest Service with Civilian Conservation Corps funding, the park aimed to restore and replicate totem poles that were fading due to weather and abandonment, using skilled Native carvers who preserved traditional techniques.
The park spans 33 acres of temperate rainforest, offering scenic hikes through western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and Alaska yellow cedar trees, and serves as a living history exhibit of Tlingit and Haida culture. Visitors can explore the 15 restored or replicated totem poles and the community house, learning about indigenous stories, symbols, and lifestyles.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, it continues as an important site for cultural preservation and education, with guided tours and educational programs illuminating Alaska Native history and artistry.
