Historical Place
Towosahgy State Historic Site in Mississippi County, Missouri, preserves a major Mississippian culture village and ceremonial center active from around A.D. 1000 to 1400, known as "Old Town" from the Osage word Towosahgy.
Once fortified by log palisades with bastions and a moat, it featured seven platform mounds surrounding a central plaza, including a prominent temple mound, with evidence of Woodland period occupation dating back to A.D. 400. Acquired by Missouri in 1967 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the unstaffed site offers visible mounds, exhibit panels on archaeological findings like post holes and ceramics, and self-guided exploration amid fertile farmland.
