Historical Place
Union Covered Bridge State Historic Site in Monroe County, Missouri, preserves Missouri's only surviving Burr-arch truss covered bridge, constructed in 1871 by Joseph C. Elliot over the Elk Fork of the Salt River using local oak timbers.
Named for the nearby Union Church, it replaced two failed uncovered bridges and served travelers on the Paris-to-Fayette road for 99 years until closed to vehicles in 1970 after heavy truck damage, later listed on the National Register of Historic Places that year.
Added to the state park system in 1967 following flood threats, the barn-like structure with its bowed design for flood stability has undergone restorations in 1968, 1988, and after 2008 flooding, now offering a peaceful pedestrian spot for photos, events like weddings, and picnics amid northern Missouri's scenery.
