Public University
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, established in 1848 when Wisconsin became a state, is the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System and the oldest and largest public university in Wisconsin.
It began with a first class of 17 students in 1849 under Professor Sterling and has grown into a major public land-grant research university spanning 933 acres. The university pioneered coeducation early by admitting women in 1863 and fully embracing coeducational status in 1874, and in 1866 it became Wisconsin's land-grant institution under the Morrill Act to support agriculture and mechanics education.
Over time, it expanded its academic offerings to include diverse fields such as medicine, nursing, agricultural economics, and education, becoming nationally recognized for academic freedom and research innovations under leaders like President Charles Van Hise.
Today, UW-Madison is distinguished by its comprehensive research facilities, historic campus, and a mission to improve people's lives beyond the classroom through public service and discovery.
