Wildlife Refuge
The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary, located near Orr, Minnesota, is a 360-acre forested refuge dedicated to the preservation and study of black bears in their natural habitat.
Operated by the American Bear Association, the sanctuary offers visitors a rare opportunity to safely observe wild black bears from an elevated viewing platform, especially during the summer months when dozens of bears visit the area.
The sanctuary’s origins trace back to Vince Shute, a logger who in the 1930s changed his approach to bear encounters after realizing the animals were not dangerous but simply hungry. He began placing food out for them to prevent property damage, which over time fostered a peaceful human–bear coexistence.
This practice evolved into a conservation and educational effort, and in 1995, Shute and his supporters established the American Bear Association to continue his mission after his death in 2000. Today, the sanctuary not only supports bear conservation but also provides public education through tours, workshops, and outreach programs that teach respectful coexistence with wildlife.
Set in a landscape of woodlands, meadows, ponds, and swamps, it remains a haven for both black bears and visitors seeking an authentic encounter with the wild.
