Whitefish Lake is a natural freshwater lake located in Flathead County, Montana, lying just northwest of the resort town of Whitefish. Formed naturally, it stretches about six miles long and more than a mile wide, covering over five square miles with a maximum depth of around 233 feet.
Surrounded by forested mountains such as Lion Mountain and the Whitefish Range, the lake sits at an elevation of about 2,999 feet, offering scenic mountain views and exceptionally clear water. Fed by Swift, Lazy, Hellroaring, and Beaver creeks, its outlet forms the Whitefish River, which continues into the Flathead River near Kalispell.
Historically, the lake was named in the 1850s for the abundant mountain whitefish that thrived in its cold waters. Today it is central to recreation and community life, serving as a popular destination for boating, swimming, and fishing, supported by Whitefish Lake State Park and City Beach.
Lake trout, cutthroat trout, and mountain whitefish draw anglers year-round, while the lake also provides drinking water and scenic value to the surrounding community, adding significant economic and environmental importance to the region.
