Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, United States

Locality

Wisconsin Dells is a small city spread across Columbia, Sauk, Adams, and Juneau counties in south-central Wisconsin, situated along the scenic Wisconsin River.

Originally named Kilbourn City after railroad magnate Byron Kilbourn when it was founded in 1856, it was renamed Wisconsin Dells in 1931, a name inspired by the region's famous sandstone gorge formations carved by glacial meltwater thousands of years ago. The area has deep roots with the Ho-Chunk and Menominee tribes, who named the Dells for the closely packed rocks along the river.

Wisconsin Dells gradually developed from a logging and milling community into a popular tourist destination well known for its natural beauty, riverboat tours, and as the "Waterpark Capital of the World" with numerous water parks and family attractions. The city balances a rich Native American heritage with its role as a vibrant vacation hub attracting visitors year-round.
