History Museum
America's Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was founded in 1988 by Dr. James Cameron, a survivor of a lynching attempt in 1930.
The museum aims to educate the public about the Black Holocaust in America, which encompasses the history of enslavement, racial violence, segregation, and systemic racism against African Americans over the past 500 years.
Inspired by the personal storytelling approach at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel, Cameron created a space that uses historical artifacts, multimedia exhibits, and personal narratives to foster understanding, racial reconciliation, and healing. After closing its physical location in 2008 due to economic challenges and Cameron's passing, the museum continued as a virtual institution and later reopened a new physical facility on the original site in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood.
The museum's exhibits cover critical themes from slavery and Jim Crow to the civil rights movement and mass incarceration, promoting honest reflection on America's racial history and encouraging dialogue for change. It has become part of the African American Civil Rights Network, helping to preserve and share these crucial stories nationally.
