Park
Apple River Canyon State Park spans 1,907 acres across limestone bluffs, deep ravines, springs, and trout streams in Jo Daviess County, northwestern Illinois near the Wisconsin border, carved by the Apple River in the unglaciated Driftless Area.
Established in 1932 through botanist Herman Pepoon's advocacy and expanded since, it protects 8.5 miles of dramatic canyon with colorful moss-covered walls, 14 fern species, over 500 herbaceous plants, 165 wildflowers, and wildlife including deer, raccoons, eagles, hawks, and 47 bird species.
Visitors hike scenic trails like River Route Nature Trail, fish for smallmouth bass, trout, sunfish, crappie, carp, and suckers, hunt in restored habitats, camp at peaceful sites, picnic, and explore additional units like Thompson, Salem, and nature preserves amid fossil-rich terrain untouched by glaciers.
