Park
Gebhard Woods State Park covers 30 acres in Grundy County, Illinois, near Morris, bordered by the Illinois & Michigan Canal to the south and Nettle Creek to the north.
Originally purchased from Mrs. William Gebhard by the Grundy County Rod & Gun Club in 1934 for $1,500 as a private fishing spot, the club donated it to the state, with Civilian Conservation Corps workers adding trails, shelters, and spawning pools amid stately trees like walnut, oak, ash, maple, sycamore, hawthorn, and cottonwood.
Popular for hiking the half-mile Gebhard Woods Trail through wildflower meadows, picnicking, camping, canoeing or kayaking on the canal (no gas motors), fishing stocked ponds for bass, crappie, and catfish, birdwatching herons and ducks, and connecting to the 61-mile I&M Canal State Trail for biking or skiing.
