Established in 1961 amid red and white pine forests, birch, aspen, spruce, and wetlands shaped by ancient glaciers, it supports abundant wildlife including black bears, moose, timber wolves, bald eagles, and birds like pine grosbeaks. Visitors enjoy boating and canoeing along 23 miles of shoreline, swimming at the beach, trout and walleye fishing, 23 miles of hiking trails linking to the Taconite State Trail, camper cabins, RV sites, winter skiing and snowmobiling, and a secluded atmosphere just south of Ely.
