The Cana Island Lighthouse, located on a nine-acre island near Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, was constructed in 1869 and first lit in January 1870 to replace the older Baileys Harbor Lighthouse.
It was built from cream city brick and initially was the tallest building in Door County, designed to guide ships safely on Lake Michigan’s often treacherous waters. Because the brick deteriorated due to harsh weather, the lighthouse was encased in riveted steel plates in 1902, with the space between filled with concrete for durability.
The lighthouse operated with keepers who maintained the light and the island, with the first keeper appointed in 1869; the station was automated in 1944, but it remains an active navigational beacon. The island also features a unique six-sided stone oil house built to safely store the volatile fuel.
Now managed by the Door County Maritime Museum and open for public tours from May to October, the lighthouse stands as a historic landmark and a prominent symbol of maritime heritage in the region, with panoramic views from the tower and preservation efforts maintaining its legacy.
