Park
Fort Ridgely State Park, located near Fairfax in Nicollet and Renville Counties in south-central Minnesota, spans about 2,000 acres of prairie hills, restored grasslands, and wooded ravines overlooking the Minnesota River Valley.
Built in 1853-1855 as a frontier police post to protect settlers after Dakota land cessions, it famously withstood two attacks during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, thanks to cannon fire, before serving as a Civil War training site until its 1867 abandonment.
Today, visitors explore stone foundations of eight buildings, a restored commissary with exhibits, a monument and cemetery honoring defenders, nearly 10 miles of hiking and equestrian trails with overlooks, modern camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing amid a mix of history and natural beauty.
