Museum
Hearthstone Historic House Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin, is the world’s first private residence ever illuminated by hydroelectric power from a central Edison system, first lit in 1882.
Built for Henry James Rogers, a paper industry executive and entrepreneur, the house was designed in the elaborate Queen Anne Victorian style by architect William Waters. It features intricate hand-carved woodwork, nine fireplaces with decorative tiles, stained and etched glass windows, and many original Thomas Edison light fixtures and switches still in place.
The house stands as a nationally significant engineering and architectural landmark, embedding local industrial history with the story of electrification. Opened as a museum in 1987, Hearthstone offers visitors a glimpse into Victorian-era life along with exhibits on the dawn of electricity, culture, and technology, preserving the legacy of a pivotal moment in American innovation.
