Park
Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park stretches 104.5 miles across five northern Illinois counties—Rock Island, Bureau, Henry, Lee, and Whiteside—following the historic Hennepin Canal, an abandoned waterway opened in 1907 to link the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers before railroads rendered it obsolete by 1951.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it features 33 locks (32 visible, some restored), unique Marshall gates, six surviving aqueducts, and scenic towpaths now serving as multi-use trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and paddling amid forests, prairies, marshes, and wildlife hotspots.
Visitors enjoy fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill along its 925 acres of calm waters averaging 5 feet deep, primitive camping, picnicking, birdwatching for waterfowl and turkeys, and exhibits at the Sheffield Visitor Center highlighting canal tools, ecology, and a half-acre prairie demonstration.
