Art Museum
The Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, was established from the private collection of wealthy businessman Kay Kimbell and his wife Velma, who began collecting art in the 1930s.
Upon Kay Kimbell's death in 1964, much of their estate and art were left to the Kimbell Art Foundation with the directive to build a first-class art museum.
The museum officially opened in 1972 in a striking building designed by architect Louis Kahn, known for its elegant cycloidal vaults and use of natural light to highlight the artworks. Its collection spans a wide range of art including antiquities, European masterpieces, Asian art, ancient American pieces, and African and Oceanic artifacts.
In 2013, the museum expanded with a second building designed by Renzo Piano to accommodate the growing collection and include an auditorium and classrooms. The Kimbell is regarded as one of the finest small art museums in the world, blending world-class architecture with an exceptional collection.
