Monument
The Lincoln Monument Association, also known as the National Lincoln Monument Association, was established in May 1865 by a group of Illinois citizens led by Governor Richard J. Oglesby to honor President Abraham Lincoln after his assassination.
The association's primary goal was to raise funds and oversee the construction of a permanent tomb for Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois, eventually deciding to place it at Oak Ridge Cemetery in accordance with Mary Lincoln's wishes.
The tomb project began in 1869 and included a large obelisk and statues representing the Civil War military branches. The association managed the tomb's construction and maintenance until 1895, when ongoing structural problems led to the tomb's custody being transferred to the state of Illinois.
The effort reflected a nationwide commitment to memorialize Lincoln's legacy and played a crucial role in establishing a significant historical monument that remains an important site of tribute.
