Historical Landmark
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site in Illinois preserves a carefully reconstructed village where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1831 to 1837 during his formative years.
Originally platted in 1829, New Salem was a small frontier town centered on saw and grist mills along the Sangamon River, supporting about 25 families before being abandoned by 1840. The site features 23 log buildings painstakingly rebuilt on original foundations by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and ’40s, including homes, stores, a tavern, a school, and mills, reflecting early 19th-century pioneer life.
The village includes original and reconstructed structures, such as the Denton Offutt Store where Lincoln worked, preserving the atmosphere of the era. Once nearly forgotten, New Salem was saved and restored through community and state efforts, with land donated by William Randolph Hearst and ongoing commitment to historical accuracy.
Today, it serves as an educational living history museum, enabling visitors to walk the streets where Lincoln began his career and learn about pioneer Illinois history.
