State Park
Matthiessen State Park in Illinois was originally a privately owned park purchased by Frederick William Matthiessen, a philanthropist from LaSalle, at the end of the 19th century.
He developed the area, employing workers to build trails, bridges, stairways, and dams. Known initially as “Deer Park” due to the abundant deer population, it includes a long narrow canyon called the Dells with a stream flowing through it. In 1943, the park was donated to the state and named in Matthiessen’s honor.
Spanning nearly 2,000 acres, the park features impressive sandstone rock formations, dramatic canyons, waterfalls including the 45-foot Cascade Falls, mineral springs, and a variety of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Its natural beauty, diverse plant life, and peaceful environment attract nature lovers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring the scenic Vermilion River area and surrounding forests.
