Memorial Park
Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota is an iconic monument featuring the carved faces of four U.S. presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—on the granite face of a mountain in the Black Hills.
The idea was proposed in 1923 by South Dakota historian Doane Robinson to boost tourism, initially considering Old West figures, but sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose the presidents to represent key themes in American history: founding, expansion, preservation, and development.
Construction began in 1927 and, despite challenges like funding shortages and Borglum's death in 1941, was completed by his son Lincoln Borglum in 1941 after six and a half years of actual carving. The heads are about 60 feet high, carved using dynamite, drills, and chisels by a hundred workers.
The monument attracts over two million visitors annually and serves both as a symbol of American history and a site of cultural significance, though it has faced criticism due to its location on sacred lands of the Sioux Nation. The memorial covers about two square miles and is managed by the National Park Service.
