Historical Place Museum
The Old Courthouse Museum in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is housed in a beautifully restored 1890s quartzite building designed by architect Wallace L. Dow.
Originally built as the Minnehaha County Courthouse and completed in 1893, the Richardsonian Romanesque style structure features a distinctive clock tower, stained glass windows, granite pillars, and 16 large murals by Norwegian artist Ole Running depicting early Dakota life. The courthouse served as a government building until 1962, after which citizens rallied to preserve it, converting it into a museum in 1974.
The museum spans three floors and showcases exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the Siouxland region, including railroads, Native American culture, pioneer life, and local towns. It also hosts educational programs, lectures, walking tours, and concerts, offering a dynamic experience for visitors. The museum is open daily with free admission and features a gift shop selling Dakota-made gifts and history books, making it a key cultural institution that celebrates the heritage of the area.
