History Museum

The Adams Museum in Deadwood, South Dakota, was founded in 1930 by pioneer businessman W.E. Adams to preserve and display the history of the Black Hills.

It is the oldest history museum in the region and houses a rich collection of artifacts including Potato Creek Johnny’s famous 7.346 troy ounce gold nugget, N.C. Wyeth’s pencil sketch of Wild Bill Hickok, the mysterious Thoen Stone recounting early gold discovery, and a rare marine reptile fossil called a plesiosaur. The museum offers exhibits that bring to life the legends of Deadwood such as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock, highlighting both the colorful characters and the rough-and-tumble history of the gold rush era.

It also explores the area’s natural history, including geology and paleontology, and addresses the city’s associations with gambling, prostitution, and crime in a thoughtfully presented way. The museum is housed in an 1892 Queen Anne-style building and is open year-round with suggested donations for admission. It is considered a top Western museum and remains a key destination to understand Deadwood’s unique past.
