Wildlife Refuge
North Platte National Wildlife Refuge – Lake Alice Unit is a protected wetland and lake area in the Nebraska Panhandle near Scottsbluff, part of a larger refuge system established in 1916 to conserve native birds and wildlife along the North Platte River.
The Lake Alice Unit centers on a reservoir covering about 1,300–1,500 acres, with low water levels in the fall that create excellent shallow‑water habitat for thousands of migrating waterfowl, shorebirds, sandhill cranes, and bald eagles, including a breeding pair of bald eagles.
The unit is open to the public only during daylight hours from roughly mid‑January to mid‑October, with the rest of the year reserved as an undisturbed sanctuary, and allows limited compatible activities like wildlife viewing, hunting, and fishing in designated areas around the lake while much of the water and shoreline remain closed to protect sensitive nesting and resting birds.
