Park
Spirit Mound State Historic Prairie in Clay County, South Dakota, about 6.5 miles north of Vermillion off Highway 19, preserves a prominent glacial drumlin hill revered by Plains Indians like the Sioux, Omaha, and Otoe as the home of dangerous little people or spirits.
Visited by Lewis and Clark on August 25, 1804, amid reports of these beings, the 320-acre site—once degraded by farming and grazing—was acquired in 2001, restored with native prairie grasses, wildflowers, and habitats for butterflies, birds, and wildlife since 2002 as a state park.
A half-mile summit trail with interpretive signs offers panoramic views, picnicking, birdwatching, and hiking, evoking the expedition's "most beautiful landscape" while honoring its cultural significance.
