Historical Place
The U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site in Galena, Illinois, is the preserved residence of Civil War general and 18th U.S. president Ulysses S. Grant.
Built in 1859–1860 for Alexander J. Jackson and designed in the Italianate architectural style by William Dennison, the two-story brick house features a low-pitched roof, bracketed eaves, and ornate balconies typical of the period.
In 1865, after Grant’s victorious return from the Civil War, the people of Galena presented him with the fully furnished home as a token of gratitude. Grant lived there with his family during his 1868 presidential campaign and used it as his political and voting address even while serving as president.
The home was donated to the city by Grant’s children in 1904 and later transferred to the State of Illinois in 1931 to ensure its preservation. Restored to its 1868 appearance, many original furnishings belonging to the Grant family remain on display, offering visitors a glimpse into mid-19th-century domestic life.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, the site now operates as a museum managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, featuring guided tours, exhibits, and seasonal events honoring Grant’s legacy.
