History Museum
The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center in Chicago is the oldest independent museum in the United States dedicated to African American history, culture, and art.
Founded in 1961 by Margaret Taylor-Burroughs and other community leaders, it was originally called the Ebony Museum of Negro History and Art and began in the Burroughs' home. It was renamed in honor of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, Chicago’s first non-Native American settler of African descent. The museum moved to its current location in Washington Park in 1973, expanding in 1993 with the Harold Washington Wing to include an auditorium and research library.
It houses over 15,000 pieces of African and African American art and historical items, offering exhibits on important cultural and historical topics such as the life of Mayor Harold Washington and African American experiences.
