Park
Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, located near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, protects the site of Fort Atkinson, the first U.S. military post established west of the Missouri River, built in 1819–1820 and active until 1827.
The park sits on about 157 acres atop Council Bluff and preserves the locations where roughly 1,200 soldiers and civilian inhabitants lived while the fort served as a hub for the western fur trade, river traffic, and early U.S. relations with Indigenous peoples of the region.
Today much of the original log fort has been rebuilt as a historically accurate reconstruction, including barracks, a council house, workshops, and the Sutler Store, and the Harold W. Andersen Visitor Center displays recovered artifacts while hosting a museum and interpretive exhibits on pioneer and military life in the 1820s.
The park offers guided and self‑guided tours, period‑craft demonstrations and living‑history events, picnic areas, and a small campground, all open year‑round with a Nebraska state‑park entry permit required.
