Museum
The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota is a unique museum and active paleontological excavation site centered around a prehistoric sinkhole formed during the Pleistocene era.
This sinkhole became a natural trap filled with sediments that preserved the remains of over 60 mammoths, mostly Columbian mammoths with a few woolly mammoths, along with fossils of other Ice Age animals and plants. Discovered in 1974 by a construction worker clearing land for a housing development, the site revealed an extensive collection of mammoth bones still largely embedded in the sediment.
A museum was built around the site to protect and display the fossils, allowing visitors to walk around the in-situ excavation and even see paleontologists at work during the dig season. It is one of the world's largest concentrations of mammoth remains and serves as a research facility and educational center, showcasing Ice Age fauna and the environment from over 140,000 years ago. The site also offers interactive exhibits and programs for visitors of all ages interested in natural history and paleontology.
